Joining a team

I'm trying to join the "Born in the USA" team and its private but I clicked on the link to go to it and it just pops up and says its private.  ok that's fine, but how the heck do you request to join the team??  any help would be appreciated.

    I changed the settings to public for the team for the moment. Once you join, I'll make the team private again. I hope you'll be able to join without a problem.

    I have both options available to me. I couldn't figure it out using either way I tried to access it.
